The Director of Aviation Operations reports to the Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer. This role is a flying position that also leads a team of pilots, maintenance mechanic, flight scheduler and support staff.
Responsibilities
- Manages all facets of Aviation Operations including flight operations, aircraft maintenance, finances, purchasing (capital projects), hiring, and hangar administration
- Ensures safe and efficient flight operations
- Ensures compliance with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, international regulations, OEM operating procedures, NTSB reporting requirements, company SOPs, industry best practices, and other industry/company initiatives, as applicable (e.g,. IS-BAO, etc.)
- Responsible for the professional standards of the crewmembers
- Ensures compliance with all applicable government regulations and laws (State, Federal, International)
- Ensures compliance with all national and local environmental laws and requirements
- Establishes and administers corporate policy for use of outside air charter operators
- Establishes standards, in coordination with Human Resources, for employee minimum qualifications, recruitment, and compensation. Conducts pre-employment interviews, and manages selection of new employees
- Responsible for development of department employees, through corporate performance management and employee coaching initiatives
- Participates in the Safety Management System
- Prepares the Aviation Operations corporate spending plan (CSP)

- Establishes and implements all Aviation Operations flight and maintenance policies and procedures
- Develops Standard Operating Procedures
- Establishes the standards for Pilot, Administrative Support, Corporate Flight Scheduler, and Aircraft Maintenance Technician performance and training
- Develops and implements all required approved training programs for crewmembers
- Maintains training records for crewmembers and ensures that qualifications are current
- Issues directives and notices to crewmembers as required
- Supervises all aircraft scheduling activities
- Ensures that crew scheduling complies with flight and duty time limitations
- Ensures that all airports and routes served by Aviation Operations are operationally suitable and meet company requirements
- Oversees all hangar operations including maintenance and security protection of the Aviation Operations facility
- Maintains flight proficiency and necessary flight and aircraft type ratings
- Acts as a flight crewmember (PIC/SIC as appropriate)
- Prepares and administers Aviation Operations annual operating budget, capital budget, purchasing, and operational expenses. Communicates Aviation Operations budget performance to management and department personnel throughout the year
- Manages Aviation Operations government/authority financial obligations (taxes, SIFL, user fees, etc. Compiles, submits and maintains all necessary and required records and paperwork
- Evaluates outside contract agencies (Fixed Base Operators, maintenance facilities, etc.) to ensure they have adequate facilities, personnel, and experience to perform the required service functions Manages contracts with outside service providers, including but not limited to training, scheduling, maintenance, charter operators and software/EFBs
- Evaluates charter operators for certification as approved providers. Will maintain list of approved charter providers, and will audit operators as needed
- Administers performance evaluations of direct reports
- Serves as a company representative with respect to other corporations and to the local and state aviation community
- Develops and implements the Safety Management System. Will monitor ongoing SMS for effectiveness in daily operations
- Develops and maintains the Flight Operations Manual
- Participates in the distribution, review, and response of accident, incident, and other occurrence reports in collaboration with the Safety Captain
- Maintains a current operations library and distributes new information as appropriate. Seeks to remain informed on the latest developments within the business aviation community, including best practices, standards, regulatory developments, operational mandates, and training initiatives
Qualifications
- Holds a valid Airline Transport Pilot Certificate
- Holds a type rating and maintains currency for up to two (2) of the types of aircraft operated, if applicable
- Possesses a First-Class FAA Medical Certificate
- Possesses knowledge with respect to the operation of the Aviation Operations, the content of the Flight Operations Manual, the provision of Title 14 of the CFRs, and the standards necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities to ensure safety
- Possesses a bachelor’s degree
